SURE CONFERENCE SCHEDULE OVERVIEW – 2nd March 2016
The detailed conference programme will be available on Friday 19th February at surebu.org.uk.
Upon arrival at the conference, please report to the registration desk in the hall of Kimmeridge House to collect your conference badge and a copy of the Book of Abstracts. You will also receive any updates and relevant information about the conference.
You are expected to attend the duration of the session in which you are presenting and you are encouraged to attend other sessions. In doing so, you will have opportunity to network with other students and staff, exchange ideas and learn about the range of research undertaken by undergraduates across the university.
You can invite others to attend the session you are presenting or the entire Conference – attendance is free but attendees are asked to register at the conference desk. Alternatively, registration can be done in advance by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with name, affiliation and email.
Complimentary lunch will be offered in the Retreat between 12:45 and 14:00 to all students presenting at the conference. To receive your complimentary lunch, you will be asked to show your SURE conference badge.
All participants (presenters and attendees) are invited to the Closing and Awards reception to be held in the Atrium from 16:45 to 17:30, when the award winners will be announced and a short speech will close the conference.
Each poster, oral presentation and art installation will be assessed by a minimum of two judges selected by the organising committee. The average marks will be used to identify the winners of the three award categories:
- research excellence will be awarded to the overall highest mark (prize: fee waiver of a master course at BU);
- best oral presentation will be awarded to the highest mark obtained by an oral presentation or second highest if the research excellence is awarded to an oral presentation (prize: funds of up to £400 to support attendance to an external conference);
- best poster will be awarded to the highest mark obtained by a poster or second highest if the research excellence is awarded to a poster (prize: one iPad).
POSTER SESSION INFORMATION
This year the SURE conference poster session will take place in room K103 from 10:00 to 11:00 on 2nd March.
You are expected to arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the session to set up your poster in your allocated poster board. Staff members of the SURE organising committee will be available to help if you require any assistance.
You are required to be by your poster for the duration of the poster session to explain and discuss your research with students and staff attending the session. During the session, each poster will be evaluated by 2-3 judges selected by the organising committee. When the judges come to your poster, you will be asked to provide a brief (maximum 5 minutes) explanation about your work and answer any questions they may have.
The poster should have maximum dimensions of 900 mm in height and 600 mm in width (A1 paper size portrait). This is due to the size and format of the boards where the posters will be displayed.
ORAL SESSIONS INFORMATION
When the programme becomes available, please read carefully to find in which session and time slot you are schedule to present. You will be required to upload your presentation before the start of your session and attend the duration of the session. Presenters should arrive in the allocated room at least 5-10 minutes before the start of the session to introduce themselves to the person acting as session chair and to upload their presentations.
Your presentation should be 10 minutes long followed by 5 minutes of questions and answers. The schedule of the conference will be strictly maintained, so you are strongly encouraged to rehearse your presentation to keep within the allocated time slot. Each presentation will be evaluated by 2-3 judges selected by the organising committee.
You are expected to prepare the presentation using PowerPoint. If you are planning to use other software (such as Prezi), please communicate to email@example.com as soon as possible, so any potential technical issues can be resolved beforehand. If you are embedding videos in your presentation, you are strongly encouraged to test whether they will play correctly in one of BU’s lecture theatres before the conference. You will not be allowed to use your own laptop as this may cause technical issues and delays, disrupting the progression of the session.
